The subway route could preserve everything the way it is right now in 2010 and still would be a success. The corridor has all the development and then some for the ridership it needs.

Each Purple Line train would do the work of about 6 Line 720 buses. The biggest benefit is that a subway extension would free up bus hours from Wilshire and parallel east-west streets and reallocate them to north-south services.

Also, development of any kind -- transit-oriented or not -- is going to be murky. The collapse of the 2000s real estate bubble has effectively poisoned the well for development for at least a generation.

That is one ugly building, couldn't they come up with something more unique or perhaps forward-thinking? Does everything need to look like Santa Monica's bad architectural examples of mixed-use buildings with the mixed up facade styles? Its so gross, is that what Venice will be represented by? How about they look at the existing community and what will fit well rather than what has worked as their standard recipe everywhere? Venice isn't cookie cutter and that needs to be taken into consideration.

The developers should also be aware of the Venice community "law"/preference that no big retail chains be allowed into the neighborhood. I'm sure that after they spend all that money building this, they will be overcharging for the commercial rental spaces that only corporate chains can afford, which will be a huge mistake. Keep it local, bring in local businesses, and price it so that can happen. There are several open retail spaces right now on Abbot Kinney Blvd, so consider if a location as good as that can't keep tenants, neither will a brand new ugly building in an up-and-coming area. And look at all the overpriced "artist" (cough -- for lawyers) lofts that are already available on Main ST and AK, do we need more overpriced lofts that can't be rented or sold?

I'm glad they are building a parking ramp, but you know it will mostly be used for folks heading to the beach. Hmmm, as a neighbor I'm not sure how I feel about this project. A community garden, a couple smaller restaurants and a parking structure would be nice.

Comment on The New Westfield Culver City: Off Target by Jack

Thanks Adam --
This is the first critique of this renovated mall I've seen, but there should be more. Good point on the parking disarray and generally disoriented new design. (And not in the more preferable "safely lost" sense of Jon Jerde's designs.) But more disturbing for me -- a Culver City citizen-- is that many of these problems exist because the whole complex has been pushed as close as possible to the 405 in order to get a big payoff from GIGANTIC vertical billboards. big, ugly, confusing, congested. And someone explain why we need TWO Targets and TWO Best Buys within a half-mile of each other....

Other than that, I love the inside. Very airy and open.

I don't think Solair is as grim as all that. The walkability in the area is excellent. It begins with the two stories of retail on the ground level (just now beginning to be occupied) and extends along Western, 6th, and Wilshire. I wish there were less parking too, but at least it's arranged in a land-saving format.

The point of density and mixing land uses with regard to transportation is three fold:
1) Bringing more within walking and biking distance
2) Adding the density to support frequent transit
3) Shortening driving distances on average

This is LA. People still want to drive, because driving is still the mode we're set up for. Still, despite its flaws, I think Solair is a big step in the right direction (although TODs don't have to be so tall to work). We'll see the wisdom of places like Solair when the next oil shock hits.

Just wanted to let you know that the LA County HOT Lanes Demonstration Project (ExpressLanes) is not on I-210. The Project will be on I-10 and I-110.
